I assume that PGUS will not be accepting donations until process for
the 501c3 is complete. Will interested persons be able to make
donations to the organization in the same way that they purchase
membership?

I called the CPA before I answered this question. We are a real
corporation. Our 501c3 is pending. We can accept donations now and
conduct business normally.
If our 501c3 is approved all donations can be considered charitable
contributions and it is retroactive to the date of 1023 filing.
If you are donating and our 501c3 is not approved:
If you are a professional you can write off the donation as a
professional membership on your individual return.
If you are not a professional it is just an expense and it is not
tax deductible.
If you are a corporation you can write it off as advertising,
marketing, outside services all depending on what the donation was.
The effects on the corporation if our 501c3 is not approved:
Any monies collected by PgUS will be considered income to the
corporation and we will have to pay taxes on it just like any other
corp.
In terms of giving donations I would like us to offer every reasonable
way for someone to donate. Yes, we will allow via the website, via
mail, via ACH etc... Did you have something specific in mind in regards
to donations?
Sincerely,
Joshua D. Drake

Would it be possible to have complimentary gifts (i.e. Pg t-shirts,
polos and other "booth swag") with suggested donation amounts? I
guess as far as making donations, the community just needs the
necessary instructions on how to make the donation.

The primary SWAG issue is one of logistics. Right now the community
orders SWAG in bulk and we distribute SWAG in bulk. Allowing for one
off distribution becomes very expensive in terms of time. Time, is the
one thing none of us have a lot of.
One thought would be to distribute this load through user groups. PgUS
orders a bunch of SWAG in bulk and then distributes it to various user
groups. Thus if Joe Conway wants a shirt, he contacts LAPUG as that is
his closest user group (even though he is in San Diego). LAPUG deals
with collecting and distribution.
Thoughts?

Sounds logical - being a newbie, how does that work? Do the user

No, I would assume that primary distribution would stay the same.
Meaning we would centrally purchase the SWAG and then distribute out to
the user groups. The user groups would handle the collections/donations
as they saw fit and then donate upstream to us. That is actually very
similar to how we do tradeshows now. Basically someone goes to a show
and says, "We need xyz". We ship them XYZ, they collect donations and
it gets donated back.

Joshua D. Drake

And in consideration I realize that not everyone would have a clue what
I meant by that. I don't see "user groups" as involved with PgUS. I see
them as involved with PostgreSQL. They can use the services that PgUS
offers, provide their own services , request from SPI (or PgEU as
appropriate etc..) or any combination thereof. User groups are
entirely autonomous to me.

I'm just saying that the proposal seems to be to involve the various user
groups in pg.us fundraising through distribution of shirts in return for
pg.us donations. Or did I miss something?

ISTM if pg.us buys the shirts, then they would likely spread them around to
any .us based groups. If pg.eu buys them they spread them around to .eu
groups. I don't think any further link is needed between the groups and the
purchasing party, since the .us or .eu would be deciding what best meets
thier organizational goals (~ spreading pg usage in the US for this group). I
suppose if you want an international distribution, you should propose pg.spi
buy shirts.

Right. User groups are autonomous with their own identity and goals.
They are however supported as the overlying goal (regardless of the
individual points) is "PostgreSQL".
