The next meeting is March 1st (we meet on the first Tuesday of every
month). The normal meeting location is the James Squire Brewhouse[1],
and AFAIK we're meeting there this month. (Hmm, this information would
be good to include on the website.)

Gavin informs me that I'll be giving a talk about the recent ARC patent
situation[2]. Anand is also going to give a talk about migrating an open
source project from MySQL to PostgreSQL.

BTW, future talks may include:

- a status report on Slony II (multi-master replication for PostgreSQL),
with Gavin (and possibly Jan Wieck if he is in town)

- a talk on optimizer internals. That's the topic of my talk at this
year's LCA, so it would be good to have a practice run at a meeting of
sydpug.

- Gavin is thinking of giving a talk on performance tips and tricks.

If you'd like to speak on any subject, please feel free to get in touch
with Anand, Gavin or myself.

Cheers,

Neil

Right. I've got to sort that out. I lost my password to MT due to a HDD
crash :-(. Its being reset.

Thanks,

Gavin

Hi all,

We are back to our usual location for the March meeting of the PostgreSQL
Users Group.

Meet us at the James Squire Brew House at King St Wharf from 18:30
onwards on the 1st of March.

Anand Kumria will be giving a presentation on best practice in schema
design. He will take the schema from an existing OSS project which uses
MySQL, rewrite the schema for PostgreSQL and make use of the schema
normalisation and referential integrity mechanisms which should all be
using in our projects.

Neil Conway will be giving a the buffer management strategy in 8.0 which
was recently discovered to be covered in a pending patent filed by IBM.
The presentation will cover:
- a review of buffer management in a DBMS, and a summary of the ARC
algorithm
- the discovery of the patent and how we decided to deal with it
- lessons learned (i.e. the latter being what other OSS contributors can
take away WRT dealing with patents)

See you there.

Gavin
