Amazon Web Services added a MySQL-based service which has some neat
features (http://aws.amazon.com/rds) around backup and scalability.
They have DB-specific instances with up to 68GB of memory available.
Anyone have any insight into whether or not this might happen for
Postgres too? It would be great promotion for it to be natively
supported on Amazon.

This is an issue for -advocacy, I think. Try running postgresql in
various cloud environments, show off the cool stuff, and report the bad
stuff. I'm sure you could make some interesting articles, and postgresql
could get some good press.
Running database systems in a cloud is fairly experimental. So,
experimentation and results tend to get press attention.
You make a good point that we want PostgreSQL to be a prominent player
in any successful experiments. However, we don't want to pretend that
any database system in the cloud is more stable and predictable than it
actually is. Otherwise, we just end up with disappointed users.
Regarding Amazon specifically: if customers demand it, they will provide
it.

Jeff Davis

Another company making the move in that direction is Teradata:
not sure if Amazon will pick this one up as hosted service.

Apparently this exists already:

Not sure this is apples to apples? Rdbhost seems to be
postgres-as-a-web-service which is not the same as postgres-as-a-service
inside a particular hosting facility. Wouldn't the WAN aspect make
rdbhost untenable for most traditional web apps?
Amazon's MySQL setup is like running your own MySQL server but without
being responsible for any of the management, backup, scaling, etc.

I thought the OP was commenting on an opportunity for promoting pg, not
seeking a hosting service. rdbhost does nothing significant to promote
pg to the world at large.
