Howdy Sydpuggers,

The previous list owner's email for this list no longer works; in fact,
the person in charge is not even in Sydney at all. I wonder if there's
still any interest in the SydPUG, and whether there's anybody who would
like to be in charge of this list.

If there's no interest, we will close the list to further activity,
until a new owner appears.

I am interested in maintaining this list. I have been involved with this
list from the beginning. In recent times haven't had much time to
allocate to this activity, but I am planning to change that.

I am more than happy to take ownership of the list and manage it.

The list is moribund. It had some good days a few years ago with the
backing of Fujitsu FAST and personalities like Charles Duffy and Gavin
Sherry
(I imagine Charles Duffy is the owner you mention? I believe he's in India
these days).

I believe the list can be safely closed.

People,

Two things come to mind:

- Is anyone interested in running an intro course on PL/pgSQL ? - I
have never really had DBs myself that needed this sort of performance
improvement but it would be a good thing to do.

- I soon will need to set up large and growing DBs of large chunks of
written text and be able to parse that for semantic meaning - it looks
like Sphynx and Xapian would be more suited to this sort of stuff but it
would be nice if I could stick to PG - any comments?

PL/pgsql is relatively simple as languages go. Are there particular
issues you've been having?

No, I haven't used it at all so far - I just thought it might be
interesting if someone is motivated to have a Meetup and give a talk.

Not going yet but I expect tens to maybe hundreds of MBs (maybe
eventually GBs?) for each person and for potentially thousands of people
- however an individual would only ever interact with their own data in
a chatbot-like environment.

I'm relatively new to this list, and have been lurking.

I've been involved in a number of Open Source lists, and suggest that it
might be more appropriate to maintain an Australian list, or
Australian/New Zealand list (rather than Sydney only), which I expect is
more likely to attract sufficient traffic to ensure the list is a
valuable and sustainable communication channel.

I would be interested in going to some talks but eg I am not interested
in an Oracle migration talk. I could set up another Meetup group (on my
account) for six months as a test - if someone else was prepared to be
the main "organiser" - a Meetup group might reach a wider PG audience
than this list has?
